Final Stretch

5/13/2015

We are in our final weeks and students are feverishly working on their personal projects. This semester feels considerably shorter than last, with the 8th grade east coast trip and graduation rehearsals slicing off the last few days of the school year. Students showcase their projects for parents and other visitors next Friday, so they are ramping up their workload in a mad dash to finish. It is important during this stage to discuss the importance of process as much as product, and to reflect on the learning that has happened along the way.

Here are some of the projects happening this semester:
  • A 3D designed and printed cryptex, a la DaVinci Code
  • A light tower, designed in Illustrator, laser cut, and powered by LED strip
  • A portable bluetooth speaker, housed in a T-connector PVC
  • A ring made from colored pencils, drilled, sanded and varnished
  • A hacked toy fighting robot that will become a remote controlled airboat
  • A digital watch kit with soldered LEDs, resistors, capacitors, and ICs
  • An LED light cube in acrylic
  • Names in lights, 3D designed and printed, with integrated LEDs, switches and battery
  • Stickers designed in Illustrator, then vinyl cut, as gifts for parents
